How to Select Interior Door Hardware in 3 Easy Steps
The hardware in your home can really help to create the look you want, so whether you're updating existing door hardware or selecting hardware for your new build, it's important to get it right. These three easy steps will set you up for success.
1. Make a List
First, you should plan out what door hardware you need and make a list so when it comes time to order you'll be organized and not confused by the different options. Walk through each room in your home where you plan to install hardware. You'll want to make a note of how many sets (front and back handle) you'll need of each kind of knob:
Keyed Entrance: Just like it sounds. These are for doors where a key should be needed to enter. If you have a rental property, you may want to add one to closets that you don't want your guests to access. Otherwise, these are usually reserved for the exterior.
Privacy: Since these have a pop lock, the obvious locations are bedrooms and bathrooms, but you may have other spaces that should lock from the inside.
Passage: These allow you to close the door, but they don't have a lock. Use these on closet doors or for main living areas and laundry rooms.
Dummy: These are decorative and act as a pull handle so you can open the door, but they don't have the mechanism of a knob. They are typically attached to the surface of the door with screws.
2. Choose Hardware Finish
Think about the look you want in your space. If you have images of rooms you love on Pinterest, social media, or from your favorite magazines, you may notice that they all have similar hardware styles in common. Ultra modern spaces look great with silver-tone hardware, especially if you're planning on using a lot of polished or lacquered surfaces. Brass tends to work best in spaces that incorporate some mid-century or glamorous elements into the room. If you're looking for a more relaxed or boho feel, I'd go with the matte black.
3. Make Selections Based on Door Style
When picking hardware, you should always consider the style of the door that it is going on. If you're replacing existing hardware, try not to go back with a similar style just because that's what was there previously. Modern doors can look beautiful with vintage hardware and traditional doors can get new life with modern knobs. We think more than needing the knobs and the door to match, you should look for inspiration based on the style of doors you have and just focus on the shapes that work. For example, we wanted to modernize traditional doors and chose these round knobs instead of square. Square just would have been too modern for the style of door.
